Starting A Business In A Recession

Starting A Business In A Recession – Is It A Good Idea?

I’ve been asked many times if starting a business in a recession is a good idea.

My answer continues to be a resounding yes!

Let me explain with my top 3 reasons why starting a business in a recession is a good idea.

You’ll Learn Bootstrapping

In good economic times, small business loans are easily available.  Venture capital and angel investors can be had for those with big ideas.

However, right now none of that is easy to come by.

You’ll learn right from the get go how to get creative about getting money.  Perhaps, you’ll have to sell some assets to get the money or borrow it from a relative if the business you want to start requires startup money.

Maybe you’ll go with a business that can be started on a shoestring budget (that’s what we teach here).

But any way you slice it, you’ll learn about bootstrapping and how to run your business when money isn’t readily available.  It’s a lesson that will serve you well throughout your life as a business owner.

Your Competition Is Leaving

To many, the idea of being in business right now sounds like a terrible idea.  Many people are avoiding starting businesses or closing their doors.  That means less competition and a less crowded marketplace which means that even if there are less customers with less money, the fact that there is less competition basically evens that out.

Everything Is Cheaper

Finding good, qualified labor is a whole lot easier right now since so many other companies are laying off their workforce.  If you’re hiring, you’ll find that you have a lot of candidates to choose from and that you’ll be able to get them for a lot less than you would have had to pay in the past.

Also, getting materials and equipment is also cheaper.   Right now is a great time to be a buyer.  Just about everyone is willing to negotiate – take advantage of that.

There are other advantages to starting a business in a recession, but those are the big ones.  And if you’re thinking about starting a home based business, be sure to get my free DVD, How To Start A Home Based Business For Less Than $25.
