Help! I Lost My Job!
It’s an all too common occurrence these days, the company you work for has to lay you off.
I get emails about this at least once a week now. Something to the effect of, “I just lost my job, now what?”
It’s easy to panic and wonder what the heck you’re going to do now. So I decided to put together this short article to help you in four steps if you lost your job.
Step 1) Take a deep breath.
If you panic and go crazy, that isn’t going to help anyone. Not your, not your family – no one.
It’s probably hard to see the opportunity you’ve been given right now since you’re likely facing the prospect of having no income.
So let me remind you again, take a deep breath. It’s important to be thinking clearly for the next steps.
Ready?
Step 2) Know where you stand
This is important as it’s going to affect what your options are. Figure out how long you have until the money runs out. Did you get a severance package?
Step 3) Look at all options
Most people who’ve just lost their job immediately dust off their resume and start looking for another job. However, that might not be the best option for you. If you remember, earlier I mentioned that this is an opportunity for you. It’s an opportunity for you to think about what you really want to do.
Do you really enjoy the work that you do?
Perhaps, there is a different career that you would like better?
Maybe you want to start your own business? I know of manystories of people who became entrepreneurs after losing their jobs.
Step 4) Decide
At this point you know where you stand financially and what all of your options are. Now it’s time to make a decision. A lot of people sit around and waffle on what to do next. Make a decision and go with it.
If you decide you want to get another job because you like it and it’s what you want to do, then by all means, go for it. If you think you want to start a business, but can’t afford to be without the steady income of a job, then pick up work where you can and work on your business part time until it can support you full time.
If you’ve lost your job, this can certainly be a frightening time filled with uncertainty, but keep looking for the silver lining in your situation and find the hidden opportunity it provides you (it’s there if you look hard enough – I promise).
