A Guide To Working From Home
When it comes to working from home, there are several mistakes I see people making that end up sabotaging their ability to succeed.
So I decided to put together this short little guide to working from home to help people work from home the smart way.
3 Tips To Successfully Working From Home
1) Dedicated Work Space
You need to find a little space that is going to be deemed your work area. Ideally, you’ll setup a home office, but I know that not everyone has extra space for that. I do recommend that you try to at least get a small desk and set it up somewhere – put it in your bedroom if you have to, but get yourself a dedicated work area.
And use this new work area only for working on your business tasks. This separation of work and home area will make it much easier to separate your home life from your home based business life. Otherwise you run the risk of feeling like whenever you’re in your home you feel like you should be working.
2) Minimize Distractions
I realize that we’re typically taught to multi-task and that’s it’s a skill that we all should learn, but constant distraction and multi-tasking will ruin your productivity.
One thing you need to do is make sure that your kids and spouse understand that just because you’re at home, you need focused work time and that they can’t just come bother you. It can take a bit of time for everyone to get used to your new arrangement, but it’ll be critical to your long term success when you’re working from home.
It seems like people who get home based jobs tend to do better at this than many home based business owners. When they’re on the clock for someone else, they’re more dedicated to make sure they actually work, but once they’re the one in charge, they think they can just stop and start as they please. Don’t make that mistake.
Even if you’re working at the kitchen table, make sure that everyone understands you can’t be bothered unless it’s an emergency while you’re working. It will actually lead to you having more time to spend with your spouse and kids.
3) Get out of the house
I’ve seen this one time and time again. You start to feel a little cooped up and stir crazy after a day or two of spending all your time at home. You work there, sleep there, play there… sometimes you just need to get out. It can be as simple as taking a walk. Go to a restaurant. For a change of pace, you could go to your local library or my personal favorite, the local coffee shop and work on a laptop for part of the day.
Keep these three tips in mind when working from home and you’ll find that working from home can be a real joy.
